At Monash Ultrasound for Women, you
have the advantage of immediate access to your First
Trimester Combined Screen results following your 12 week
ultrasound, given bloods are collected prior to the scan
being performed
Should I see a Genetic
Counsellor?
- Women who are pregnant or
planning to be pregnant after the age of 37
- Pregnant women whose ultrasound
examinations or blood test results indicate that their
pregnancy may be at increased risk for conditions such
as Down syndrome
- Families where a genetic
condition such as Down syndrome, Cystic Fibrosis,
Thalassemia and Spina Bifida is present in a close
family member
- Couples who have already had a
child with a birth defect/genetic condition
- Couples who are first cousins or
other close blood relatives
- Couples concerned about the risk
that their jobs, lifestyles or medical history may pose
to pregnancy outcome. Common concerns include exposure
to radiation, medications, illicit drugs, chemicals or
infections
What happens at a Genetic
Counselling Session?
During a genetic counselling session,
the genetic counsellor will:
- Ask you about your main questions
and concerns
- Record relevant information about
your
family, medical and pregnancy history

Discuss your pregnancy testing options
- Help you interpret medical
information and explain the role of genetics in these
conditions
- Arrange for further testing if
necessary
How to Refer?
- Women may self refer
- GP, Obstetrician or other health
professional may refer
-Interpreter services are available
for all genetic counselling sessions-
Please inform the genetic counsellor
if you or your patient requires an interpreter
